It’s the spring of 2020 and I’m learning how to become a new mom and run a business, while witnessing dozens of small businesses scrambling to pivot their entire business because of Covid.

Since I was running a local marketing agency at the time, I was well equipped to help my clients stay afloat with creative strategies, but not everyone has a dedicated marketing person or team supporting them.

I decided right then and there that if I could not be everyone’s agency, I was going to teach them how to think like a marketer and do their own marketing to drive local behavior. It was a way for me to impact thousands of people’s lives in my own city and beyond and even on sleepless nights with a new child, I accepted the challenge of figuring it out.

Here’s what I learned along the way…

There’s very little information out there regarding local marketing

There is a lot for startups, ecommerce, and small businesses. And so one would think that “small business marketing & education” would apply to them, however being a small business is a very, very LARGE bucket to put people in. I can be a small business and make pillows I sell through Amazon. I can be a small business and sell car insurance with a team of 100. I can be a small business and own a brick & mortar clothing boutique with no employees.

That means that your typical “small business marketing” course or podcast or social media account might have advice or strategies that aren’t truly best if you need locals to shop with you and become fans.

When all of this clicked, I realized that local marketing needed to be a specific type of marketing that was more widely known because it has some nuances that are incredibly important when doing business geographically.

So I started to host workshops and courses and in-person classes. I wanted to teach people “how to fish” when it comes to building a solid local marketing strategy and to this day, it’s what gets me excited to show up at Hummingbirds, knowing we can help a brand move products, get services booked, and launch with a ton of buzz because of our software.

Drumroll please… 🥁

We’re launching Local Marketing School podcast on May 6, 2024 to help people understand how others like them do their marketing, and the tools they can use to creatively put themselves in the minds of consumers in specific communities. You’ll also see this content pop up on a handful of supportive educational channels (yep, you’ll see me on TikTok more regularly)!

local marketing school subjects

You’ll hear from big brands entering new retailers and sharing how they drive awareness and you’ll hear from single store boutique owners who tell us how they get their customers to fall in love with them. You’ll hear from people who offer services and solutions like PR agencies and tech companies that help people drive local awareness to gather ideas. And of course, I’ll share what I’m seeing and hearing as I talk to our customers, my favorite hyperlocal brands, and trends I’m noticing.

My intention is to give you a few nuggets per episode that you can try, share with your peers, and truly be your best resource when it comes to building a thriving company with locals who love you.

Tune into the first three episodes that drop on May 6 and tell me, who else do you want to hear from? What do you want to learn?

Get notified when the first episodes drop!
